An Evening at The Schnitz

Attending an event at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall offers a distinctive experience that combines historical elegance with modern comfort. From the moment you approach the building and see the glowing “Portland” sign, you’ll sense the venue’s special character. The theater’s gorgeous architecture creates an atmosphere of refinement that enhances any performance, and the acoustics consistently receive praise from performers and audiences.

You can be confident of receiving exceptional sound quality throughout the hall, thanks to the portable acoustic shell and intentional architectural design. Whether you’re seated in the orchestra level or the upper balcony, you’ll enjoy clear, balanced audio that brings every musical nuance to life.

The concert hall’s configuration also ensures that most seats provide excellent sightlines. You’ll see minimal obstructions, allowing you to engage with performances fully and appreciate the venue’s technical specifications. Advanced lighting systems with ETC Eos Ti and Ion consoles capable of 12 universes are just a few of the features that the theater uses to create stunning visual presentations that complement each performance.

Atmosphere and Amenities

Part of the renovation was to help the interior of the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall showcase a few beautifully restored decorative elements from the original 1928 design. For example, the grand lobby features the famous crystal chandeliers, which were restored and refitted with new material. New wool carpeting, designed in Portland and loomed in New Zealand, adds warmth to the space while ensuring the Rococo-style lobby maintains its historical character.

This popular Portland theater presents a diverse range of events and facilitates event rental services, so you might see everything from jazz performances and folk music concerts to dance presentations, theater productions, and lectures. The Oregon Symphony also performs regularly at the venue, showcasing both classical masterworks and contemporary compositions. This variety means that each visit to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall can offer you a completely different experience.

Concessions are available through the venue’s food and beverage operations, although visitors should note that transactions are cashless. The venue accepts credit and debit cards as well as contactless payment methods. Cash-to-card machines, also known as reverse ATMs, are provided free of charge in the lobby area for those who prefer to convert cash.

Sound and Production Quality

The technical specifications of the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall support productions of the highest caliber. The sound system includes a Midas HD 96 console with 144 mono inputs and extensive processing capabilities. The fixed PA speakers with D&B subwoofer arrays and XSL8 speakers create powerful yet refined sound distribution throughout the hall.

Technically minded concertgoers will notice that the lighting rig at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall includes 222 ETC Sensor Classic dimmers at 2.4kW and 20 production dimmers at 6kW. Front-of-house positions feature various Source 4 instruments, ranging from 5-degree to 50-degree lenses with Selador LED fixtures. Three Lycian followspots and two Strong Xenon Super Trouper followspots provide additional flexibility.
